Post Malone boasts the top song of 2023 as a host of Aussie artists make the list
‘Chemical’ by globally-acclaimed superstar Post Malone has been crowned the No. 1 song on Australian radio in 2023.
Released in April, ‘Chemical’ was no match for the competition, accumulating 23,826 spins and spending two consecutive weeks perched on top of the weekly AirCheck National Radio Airplay Chart.
While not even coming close to Miley Cyrus’ incredible 14 week chart reign with ‘Flowers’, ‘Chemical’s strength was its consistency.
The song held its own in the Top 10 for 23 weeks and did not dip lower than No. 17 for eight consecutive months. ‘Chemical’ had an average chart position of 8.4, superior to ‘Flowers’ by a significant margin.
Peking Duk was the highest placed Australian act in 2023 with ‘I Want You’ ft. Darren Hayes (No. 13) racking up 18,693 spins. Next up was The Kid Laroi’s ‘Love Again’ (29), followed by Troye Sivan’s ‘Rush’ (38). Overall, 21 songs by Australian artists made the list.
i98FM played more Australian music than any other commercial radio station in 2023. The Wollongong station hit play on 390 different songs by Aussie artists, totaling 25,712 spins.
Jaben Ryan, i98FM Content Director, said: “Australian music is filled with amazing artists, musicians, song writers and performers, and i98’s strong commitment to Australian music will continue to grow.
“From new music, to breakthrough artists, to the stars on the world stage, we have an amazing catalogue of music available and I encourage all radio stations to support our home grown talent.”
For the second year running, Ed Sheeran owns the most chart entries with radio favourites ‘Eyes Closed’ (No. 6), ‘Celestial’ (8), ‘2step’ (61), ‘Life Goes On’ (65), ‘American Town’ (70), ‘Bad Habits’ (76) and ‘Shivers’ (93).
Dua Lipa, Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, The Weeknd and Post Malone each scored four entries in the Top 100.
Universal Music Australia is back to winning ways with a 41.31% share of the Top 100 songs. Aside from ‘Chemical’, the major’s next best performing tune was ‘Creepin’ by Metro Boomin, The Weeknd & 21 Savage at No. 4.
